Maraga Brings Presidential Campaign to Kerugoya, Vows to End Government Looting

Former Chief Justice David Maraga brought his 2027 presidential campaign to Kerugoya town on Wednesday, March 11, 2025, urging residents to register as voters and declaring that next year’s general election represents a turning point in Kenya’s democratic history.

The visit to Kerugoya marked Maraga’s 21st county stop under his United Green Movement Party, as the former judiciary chief continues to build grassroots momentum ahead of what he described as a “revolutionary” election.

Addressing supporters during the engagement, Maraga launched a scathing attack on the current administration, accusing it of unprecedented plunder of public resources and framing his candidacy as the remedy Kenya urgently needs.

“I have never seen a government that loots more than this current one,” he said, drawing loud applause from the crowd. He pledged that should he win the presidency; his first order of business would be to bring the looting to an immediate halt.

Maraga painted a picture of a country rich in potential but crippled by the greed of those entrusted with its resources, arguing that Kenya does not need external borrowing or increased taxation to fund its development agenda, only the political will to protect what already exists.

“Kenya is wealthy enough to finance its own operations,” he said. “The only problem is the looting of public resources.”

The former Chief Justice went further, promising that his administration would not merely stop the theft but would actively pursue accountability. He said those found to have participated in the pillaging of public funds would face the full force of the law.

“If elected, my government will prosecute all those involved in the theft of public resources,” he declared, signalling that anti-corruption enforcement would be a centrepiece of his presidency.

Maraga, who served as Chief Justice from 2016 to 2021 and is widely remembered for the landmark 2017 presidential election nullification ruling, has been positioning himself as a clean-hands alternative to Kenya’s established political class. His United Green Movement Party has sought to appeal to voters frustrated with both the government and the mainstream opposition.

His Kerugoya stop is part of an ambitious nationwide voter registration drive, with the former CJ using each county visit to simultaneously recruit supporters and encourage civic participation ahead of the 2027 polls.
