Wang’uru town has moved a significant step closer to attaining municipality status following the approval of an Ad-Hoc Committee report on the delineation of the town’s urban boundary by Members of the County Assembly.
The proposed municipality is set to cover an area of approximately 25.45 square kilometres, incorporating Wang’uru and Kimbimbi townships along with the neighbouring localities of Redsoil, Thiba North, Thiba South, and Mburoko villages. With the assembly’s endorsement now secured, the process moves to the County Government for finalisation in accordance with the Urban Areas and Cities Act, 2011, and the Urban Areas and Cities Act (General) Regulations, 2022.

Reacting to the adoption of the report, the Chairperson of the Lands and Physical Planning Committee and Tebere Ward MCA, Hon. Peter Karinga, hailed the milestone as a critical step toward structured urban governance. He stated that the newly approved boundary framework would provide the legal and administrative foundation required for effective urban planning, coordinated development, and efficient delivery of public services to residents.
Hon. Karinga further underscored the broader significance of the municipality designation, noting that it would foster orderly urban growth, enhance land-use management, and serve as a check against unplanned and unregulated expansion. Equally important, he added, is the role the boundary delineation will play in protecting the productive agricultural land that surrounds Wang’uru, a vital economic resource for the wider region.
The formalization of the boundary is also expected to strengthen the town’s case for elevation to full municipality status, unlocking a new chapter of planned growth and improved governance for its residents.
In the same session, the assembly also took up an Ad-Hoc Committee report on the delineation of the Kagio/Sagana Urban Centre, raising fresh prospects for the eventual establishment of Sagana Municipality in the near future.
The attainment of municipality status carries significant economic and developmental implications. Towns with municipality designation become eligible for large-scale, donor-funded infrastructure programs, a benefit already being realized in the Kerugoya-Kutus Municipality, which has received substantial support through the World Bank-backed Kenya Urban Support Programme.
Residents and stakeholders in Wang’uru now await the County Government’s next steps as the town edges closer to a new era of urban development.
