Kagio Traders Eye Relief as New Modern Market Takes Shape.

The construction of a modern market in Kagio, Kirinyaga County, is on track to redefine commercial activities in the region, benefiting an estimated 1,000 traders. Officially launched by President William Ruto in April 2025, the project is currently 60% complete and aims to provide an array of modern facilities including spacious stalls, a mother’s room, a children’s play area, Sacco offices, and an advanced ICT hub.

Designed as a two-storey facility, the market is expected to revolutionize the trading landscape in Kagio. One of the key features will be cold storage and organized trading spaces specifically aimed at supporting local farmers involved in tea, coffee, dairy, and fresh produce. By reducing post-harvest losses, the market enables these farmers to negotiate better prices and reach a wider pool of buyers, significantly boosting their incomes and viability in a competitive market.

Justus Chomba, the Clerk of Works on site, highlighted the project’s local impact, stating, “The project has benefited locals who work here and local suppliers who deliver construction materials.” With over 50 workers, predominantly local youth and interns, engaged on-site, the construction activity not only fosters job opportunities but also equips the community with practical skills that will be essential for future employment prospects.

Traders currently operate along the busy Sagana-Kagio-Kutus road. Concerns regarding safety, congestion, and sanitation have plagued the current trading environment. The establishment of this modern market is expected to formalize trade practices in the area, improve hygiene standards, and enhance urban order once the project is completed.

Local traders have expressed their enthusiasm for the new market, anticipating it will change the exploitative conditions often imposed by middlemen, thereby boosting the incomes of smallholder farmers who depend heavily on accessible local markets to sell their products. Janice Micheal, a melon trader, voiced his optimism regarding the future of trading in the area. “Rodents, rain, dust, and the lack of a centralized market have greatly troubled us. This market gives us hope for a better future and more customers,” he remarked.

Moreover, the community’s excitement is palpable as many residents believe that the new market will speed up economic growth and development. The modern facilities envisioned in the market not only indicate a forward-thinking approach to commerce but also signify a commitment to improving the livelihoods of ordinary citizens in the region.

In addition to economic benefits, the market is conceived as a community space that will encourage social interaction. The inclusion of a children’s play area and a mother’s room reflects an understanding of the diverse needs of families in the area, making the market more than just a place to conduct business. It aims to be a hub of community life where families can gather, socialize, and enjoy a safe environment.

With construction now past the halfway mark, focus is shifting to timely completion and equipping of the facility so that the promise of a modern, organised and inclusive market can be realised for Kagio’s traders, farmers and residents.
