Francis Wambugu Irungu Residents of Mwea East and West sub-counties in Kirinyaga County can now access government services closer to home following the official opening of the new Mwea Huduma Centre.
The facility becomes the 61st Huduma Centre in Kenya and the second in Kirinyaga County, and is expected to significantly improve access to public services for thousands of residents in the populous Mwea region and surrounding communities.
The launch marks a major milestone in the government’s ongoing drive to decentralize public services and enhance convenience, efficiency and accessibility for citizens seeking essential government services, reducing the need for residents to travel long distances for basic documentation and assistance.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Mwea East Deputy County Commissioner Fred Ayieko, who represented Kirinyaga County Commissioner Shufaa Mwijuma, emphasized the importance of providing quality and respectful service to all citizens, particularly senior members of society.
Ayieko reminded staff and security officers stationed at the centre that elderly citizens deserve to be served with dignity, courtesy and integrity whenever they visit government offices.
“Senior citizens are a special group in the society and should always be treated with utmost respect and compassion. Every interaction with them should reflect integrity, patience, and professionalism,” he said.
Mwea Member of Parliament Mary Maingi, said the opening of the centre represented a major milestone in efforts to bring government services closer to the people.
“Today, the Mwea Huduma Centre officially opened its doors to the public, marking a major milestone in our efforts to bring government services closer to the people. I am delighted that from today, the people of Mwea and neighbouring areas can conveniently access essential government services right here at home,” said Maingi.
She added that the operationalization of the centre would greatly enhance service delivery, improve accessibility, and save residents valuable time and resources previously spent travelling outside Mwea in search of services.
“Bringing services closer to the people remains at the heart of our development agenda,” the MP said.
The occasion was attended by the Mwea East Deputy County Commissioner, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Regional Director Eng. Charles, and members of the MP’s team, among other stakeholders.
The Mwea Huduma Centre is expected to offer a wide range of government services under one roof, including national identification, registration, licensing and other essential citizen services, cutting down on the time and cost residents previously incurred while seeking such services from offices outside the sub-county.
