Kirinyaga County Women Representative Hon. Njeri Maina has called on young people, particularly those from Generation Z, to register as voters and aim for elective positions in the upcoming 2027 General Elections.
Speaking at the Tupange Kesho Youth Summit in Kirinyaga, supported by the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), on 16 January 2025 she urged the youth not to get lost in empty slogans, highlighting that their time to lead had come.
“Believe in your legitimacy; you do not need validation to lead,” she emphasized, reminding the youth that they have often been overlooked despite being the most informed generation. Njeri encouraged the youth not to wait for tomorrow to make their mark but to take the initiative to lead in the next elections.
The summit saw a large turnout of young people from across the county and focused on economic empowerment through leadership training and financial support. Hon. Njeri announced the disbursement of KSh 10 million to registered youth groups for income-generating projects. In addition, she provided KSh 5.8 million to enhance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, focusing on skills in trades like ICT, mechanics, and agribusiness to promote job creation.
These efforts aim to empower Kirinyaga’s youth, who represent over 60% of the population under 35, with the financial resources and practical skills necessary for self-reliance and community development.

Senator Hon. Kamau Murango echoed Njeri’s message, praising the enthusiastic turnout of youth and emphasizing the importance of unity. “As the youth, make sure you are at the table because if not, that puts you on the menu,” he cautioned, underscoring the need for youth involvement in leadership roles.
Baragwi MCA Hon. David Mathenge shared a message of perseverance, reflecting on his own journey to leadership. “We have struggled our way to these leadership positions!” he stated, encouraging the youth not to be discouraged by their current circumstances and highlighting the importance of resilience in overcoming obstacles.
Victor Kinuthia, a beneficiary from Gichugu Constituency, expressed his gratitude for the INNET program – under partnership with Equity Bank led by Hon. Njeri. “We are happy to have received Kshs. 300,000 cheque that we will use to boost our businesses,” he said, urging his peers to participate in such opportunities. “Always show up whenever you hear of these initiatives,” Kinuthia added, pointing out the tangible benefits to their livelihoods.
The Tupange Kesho Youth Summit not only showcased the commitment of local leaders to empower the youth but also emphasized the critical role that young people will play in shaping Kirinyaga’s future. With the support of funding and training, the participants left the event feeling motivated and equipped to take on leadership roles. As they navigate the path to the 2027 General Elections, the energy and determination displayed by Kirinyaga’s youth signal a promising future.
